Our Red River home and the flood of 2010

Middle Tennessee is begining to take inventory today of the damage that has been done by the massive flooding to the area. Homes, businesses, and whole communities and nieghborhoods have been under water for the past four days. Ten of our counties have been approved for disaster relief from President Obama.
Our home here along side the Red River was spared. However, our neighbor next door wasn't so fortunate. When back water from a near by creek over flowed its banks it rose and reached the top of thier two story home. They had time to move their furniture out and everything else was moved to the top floor.
When our nieghbor came to our door on Sunday morning asking for help we saw that this flood was going to be a bad one, but we had no idea how bad. The Red River rose to a record breaking height of 50 feet. All you could see for miles was water and the tops of trees.
Towns are with out clean water to drink and bathe in. There have been missing persons and deaths. Thousands were without power. In one community outside of Nashville,Tn a woman gave birth to a baby inside her home when local dr.'s prediatricians, and nurses voluenteered to hop in a boat to assist her. The baby was healthy and so was the mother.
We thought that it would seem like forever before the water would begin to drop arund here and where would it go? But just as quickly has it came...it went.
The river is almost back inside its banks and everything is covered in a thin coating of mud and gunk. The smell is stagnent and musty. Its then it hit me. Then I begin to realize everything that has been affected by this. All the clean up and debris that will have to be done and moved out. I wonder how long it will take to return things to the way it was before? To make homes and buildings that were practically new...new all over again? And will it be just the same?
My neighbors home is caked with mud. Mud on everything. Everything will have to be gutted and carpet and flooring replaced.
It will be interesting to see the transformation take place as Middle Tn rebuilds. Below are some pictures taken of the Red River and Sulfur Fork flooding.
